Recently I went to visit a friend of mine. Way back in the day, when we first met each other, he mentioned that he was working within the entertainment industry. Although we spoke about work in general we never got into the details of it. It was quite surprising to me when I visited him in his hometown that we were absolutely swamped with people asking for autographs and asking for photographs. It was the craziest experience I have had in a long time. I honestly had no idea who he was when I met him, neither did the rest of my group at the time. Nobody had ever heard of him or seen him and yet in his home province he is this huge, amazing celebrity.
It reminded me of a famous business and marketing saying that says:
“If you sell to everyone, you sell to no one”.
It was powerful to me to physically experience it.
If he had made his focus being well known across the entire country, I think he might have lost the opportunity to become the success that he is today. He would have had to spread himself out so thinly. The whole approach that he has to his entertainment might have had to change completely to take in certain niches, certain other target audiences.
It hit me that even in business you need to “find your fame”.
If you have a specific product or a specific service that you offer you are going to be focusing on a very specific niche and target market. You might not become the next Coke that is a worldwide brand and known everywhere – that is not even where our small business owner minds dare to go when we start our businesses initially. You are more than welcome to go for world domination, but that should never be your immediate goal or main focus. We are just here to build strong successful & sustainable businesses; businesses that show continuous growth.
I think the one truth in business (just as it was for my friend) is this: that if we find our specific focus, our specific target audience, find our “fame” within the business industry – THAT is where the power lies and the magic start to happen.
So find YOUR “fame”.
