Everyone is experiencing some sort of January financial depression.
This is something I don’t understand. We all have the same 24 hours available to us every day. So why is it that one person has money and another one doesn’t? Why one person’s business flourishing and another one’s is is stagnating or dying?
This all boils down to choices. If you look back at some of the choices throughout your life, whether big or small, it’s shocking to find how many of them steered your life and business into entirely new directions.
So when business owners tell me that they have to “tighten their belts” and cut back on spending money on the business at the BEGINNING of a new year, it completely blows my mind. If you don’t have money in the bank and money that’s continually flowing in, whether at the beginning, middle or end of the year; that means something is wrong.
I completely understand the predicament of the scenario; every business owner has found themselves at ground 0 somewhere along their business journey. But this is exactly where your choices become critical and you can either elevate your situation or completely destroy everything you’ve work so hard for.
When something is wrong with your business, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to pack up and shut down. More often than not it’s due to things that can easily be changed. If something is wrong in your business it doesn’t make you a bad entrepreneur or unsuccessful business owner. You are just too close to see what the problems and solutions are; you are too in the thick of it to see things clearly. And this makes you vulnerable to bad choices.
So when you realise that your business is “sick”, your actions need to mirror that of when your child or baby is sick (because that’s what your business is to you). If my child is sick I don’t sit around telling everyone that we can’t go to the doctor right now because it’s January and we have to “tighten our belts”. No! Even if there were NO money available, I would be scrounging and hustling to ensure that I take my child to the doctor IMMEDIATELY. If I don’t there will be detrimental (and even fatal) consequences.
It’s the exact same concept when it comes to your business – even more so when your own survival relies on it being alive and well. You need to take care of your business. You need to speak to an expert. And when you go to the experts, you are not handing your baby over; you are not losing control. The experts (just like doctors) are there to consult with you, go through all your options and help you makes the necessary decisions.
If your business baby is in trouble this first month of the new year; you need to fix it. You need to take your business baby to an expert. It won’t get better by itself. In fact, if you find yourself in a tight spot and don’t get the help you need your business predicament will simply go from bad to worse over time. And you don’t want to look back with regret saying “if I only…” The time to take action and make the right decisions is now.
