We have to give a lot of training to upper management, CEO’s & owners of companies. That is not because they are actually going to start doing their own social media marketing, but their biggest concern is the fact that they have to sit in status meetings with marketing teams and department heads. And that these guys are throwing all the various social media marketing jargon & lingo around and could really be telling them absolutely anything, because they don’t understand what is being said.
And that is a huge problem, because if you do not have the basic or foundation knowledge regarding social media marketing people can take advantage of you. Especially when so many people are giving themselves out as experts these days. So one of the biggest tricks these guys have is to try and impress you with numbers.
So they will often tell you that you had a fantastic month since you had THOUSANDS of impressions. But in reality impressions do not mean much, because an impression is merely the amount of times a post is seen. So even if you had 18 000 impressions it could’ve been just one person who saw the same post 18 000 times.
What you’re really after is REACH. And we are talking basic analytics here. You want to know how many people you have reached individually. So when we say that we have REACHED 18 000 people, THAT number starts being impressive because it means that we have reached 18 000 different individuals.
And these terms are incredibly important because this is one of the tactics people use to give you a false impression of the state of your social media marketing. Don’t be taken advantage of simply due to your lack of knowledge.
