When it comes to vanity metrics the basics are simple; we need to value quality over quantity. People get so wrapped up in their following and their likes;
“How can we get to 10 000 on Facebook?”
“How can we get to 10 000 on Instagram?”
Well, getting there is not really the problem. Anybody can “get” to those numbers. But many times that’s all it is; just numbers. You’ll often find that the business with only 1000 followers vs. the one with 10 000 shows much more ROI when it comes to their social media marketing.
There could be various reasons for that:
- the 10 000 consists of family members and friends and a few random other tom, dick and harry’s who really could not care two hoots about you and your business.
- the 10 000 consists of 9000 that were bought to increase the vanity status of the account (in other words; these numbers will not be doing your profit margins any favours).
Whatever the case may be; these 10 000 followers consists of thousands of dormant and inactive users. And dormant and inactive users hurt your pages & accounts MUCH more than just having a few hundred of loyal and interacting fans.
So it’s very important to make a mindshift and move away from this kind of thinking because your business success is not linked to the amount of followers you have; it lies in the amount of loyal followers you have who engages with your brand, powerful and detailed targeted ads that you will get your brand in front of people who appreciates your product and service and valued knowledge-sharing content.
