Today I want to share a story with you that has an amazing message and very powerful lesson attached to it. Sadly, we recently said goodbye to one of the biggest musical legends of our country. One of his fellow musicians shared this heartwarming tale.
If you are a beginner or an amateur in any business or any industry, the first thing that you will need to do is search for a mentor. It is the easiest, quickest and smartest way of reaching success. This is exactly what this young musician did, and he found this musical legend.
One day he asked him; “What does it take for me to become as successful as you are?”
He was expecting a kind of road map, a recipe for success; go get that guitar, phone that connection ‘coz that guy will help you out, use that sound engineer etc. He was looking for the exact recipe to follow in the footsteps of this giant. But the answer he got was surprising.
The legend simply replied; “It takes 13 000 gigs, son…”
That is a very powerful message for us to take away. You can have as much natural talent and skill as you like, you can have as much academic teachings and accolades behind your name, and it can still not matter. If you do not have the necessary experience to go along with it, you are not able to really offer someone something they really need on the professional skill level they require. I find this a lot in terms of social media marketing.
I find people on a daily basis who claim to be social media marketers, social media managers and social media experts (and sometimes they even claim that they have studied it), but as soon as you ask them the technical questions any expert is supposed to know, they look like a deer caught in headlights. They have NO idea what you are talking about. And these are the people handling other people’s businesses. They have been entrusted with your business babies.
I strongly urge you to look for the person who has done 13 000 gigs. Do not settle for less because of a pricing issue. I can promise you, it will cause you more damage in the long run to hand your business baby to someone who does not know what they are doing, than paying a fair and standard price for a great and professional service.
